Torc in St Justin Celtic Heart Design

Torc Heart designs continue to be our best sellers. Hearts represent love in all its many aspects and they are also seen as symbolizing 'having' the power of courage and will. To the ancient Egyptians it was the heart, rather than the brain, which was seen as the organ that held the person's mind and soul.

Heart knots are a rather recent addition to Celtic symbolism. Hearts as symbols of 'love' date from the later medieval period but have become as established part of the Celtic repertoire in the last decade of the 20th century.

Celtic Glass Designs has teamed up with St Justin to bring you a hand crafted range of pewter jewellery, including pendants and necklaces, earrings, torcs and bracelets.

Each piece of St Justin jewellery is crafted by hand and eye in Cornwall, the South West extremity of Britain. This wild and beautiful land was home to the many native Celts who were driven away from the temperate midlands of Britain by invading European warriors, such as the Angles of Northern Germany. It is in places such as Cornwall, Ireland, Wales and Scotland that the art of the Celts and ancient Britons has survived, carved into stone tombs and discovered on pottery fragments and ornaments.

According to classical writers, the Celts wore torcs into battle. Both neck and arm torcs have been discovered in Britain and Europe and it is thought that they marked a person of high status, such as a warrior or chieftain.

Made in pewter.
