Thanksgiving Day, Harvest Festival CelebrationsMankind throughout history has held thanksgiving ceremonies. In Celtic Britain people believed that the success or failure of a crop was caused by good or evil spirit forces. The 29th September being Michaelmas Day marked the end of harvesting and is also a Celtic Quarter Day. Thanksgiving was offered to the Spirits and the harvest celebrated with a traditional meal of roast goose and apples. The origins of this festival still survive today as many communities in the UK enjoy their Harvest Festivals. In the United States, Thanksgiving Day is a time for a family thanksgiving celebrations. On this day a traditional meal of turkey and pumpkin pie is eaten. The origins of Thanksgiving Day in the United States date back to 1621 when the Pilgrims celebrated their first year and first harvest in the New World. The harvest was successful and plentiful, therefore the Governor, William Bradford announced a day of Thanksgiving for all. This tradition continued annually and in 1863 President Abraham Lincoln made a proclamation that a Thanksgiving Day be held annually on the 4th Thursday in November and in 2023 this will be on November 23rd.
